Buyer’s Guide: Purchasing the Best Kratom

Since kratom’s discovery centuries ago, the Asia-native plant has become increasingly popular in the western world for its potential energizing and mood-altering effects. Many herald the coffee relative as a natural alternative to medication, opioids, and more. It has been used in Southeast Asia for centuries by natives who chewed its leaves for energy. But what is the best way to go about purchasing some for yourself? How do you know which is the right type?

Choosing the Kratom for You

There are so many types of kratom available to purchase that it may feel impossible to pick the best one. Who may you trust? What type is the best? To help you decide on what type of kratom might be the best choice for you, we’ve broken down the three main strains of kratom:
  • Red Vein: Red vein kratom gets its name from the red stem and veins seen in the plant leaves. Red vein is one of the most popular strains of kratom, and is thought to have more sedative effects. It is considered the most potent strain, with the highest concentration of 7-OH*.
  • White Vein: Harvested from young kratom trees, white vein kratom is often used for its potential uplifting and stimulating effects. This strain of kratom may be identified by the lightly colored leaf veins, and has the highest mitragynine content of all the strains.
  • Green Vein: Green vein kratom is considered by kratom users to be the best middle-ground between red and white veins. It boasts potential stimulating effects in smaller doses and sedative effects in larger ones, with a lower potency than other strains. Green vein kratom is thought to be the best option for beginners.

*According to Psychadelic Science Review, “7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) is a minor alkaloid compound found in the plant Mitragynia speciosa”.

Where Could You Buy Kratom?

There are lots of places to buy kratom, but choosing a trustworthy source may be hard. With kratom available in nearly every smoke shop and online supplement store, sorting through the options feels like it could take forever.
One of the most crucial steps in choosing a kratom supplier is to always do research before you buy anything. Looking at reviews, asking for recommendations from kratom users, and looking for certificates of authenticity should be at the top of your list. How to Pick the Best Style of Kratom

Kratom may be purchased in many forms, including powders, capsules, drinks, edibles, and more. Typically, high-quality kratom should come directly from Southeast Asia and be as fresh as possible. Some vendors will offer information about the kratom harvest location and time, so it may be best to choose a vendor that offers such information. The texture of kratom powder or capsules should feel like a fine powder; the finer the texture, the better the quality. The smell should remain natural, and should not be scented or flavored unless in drink form.
Depending on the potency desired and personal preference for taste, there are various ways one may take kratom. The most common way to enjoy kratom is by stirring the crushed leaf powder into drinks. Another popular method is brewing kratom tea, also called elixir tea. There is also the “toss and wash” method, which involves a user placing a spoonful of kratom in their mouth, then following with a drink to wash it down. Capsules are made by placing the dried and crushed kratom into pill capsules that may be swallowed. There are also less common methods of taking kratom, including resins, drinks, tinctures, and extracts.
